51 apartments remain closed to their residents in Sydney's Opal Tower after structural cracking on Christmas Eve was found. The developer of the new Sydney high-rise apartment block evacuated on Christmas Eve says there is 'absolutely no danger for residents' and the company is confident the 'localised' damage to an internal wall can be fixed. About 300 residents were told to leave Opal Tower at Sydney Olympic Park on Monday afternoon after fine cracks and a split in the wall on level 10 sparked initial fears the building could collapse. Most residents were allowed to re-enter later that evening, although 51 apartments in the 38-storey tower were deemed unsafe. Some residents were still unable to get back into their apartments on Boxing Day.

Ecove director Bassam Aflak on Wednesday defended the 'high-quality building'. He said that the Australian project's builder, Icon Construction Group, was a 'well-established high-quality builder'. Aflak also criticised media coverage of the cracked building as 'sensational', saying the incident 'happened over the Christmas break when there is a scarcity of people who can comment with authority'. 'The important fact is that there is absolutely no danger for the residents. We're confident this localised issue can be fixed. Most people are now back in their homes.'

Aflak said that a concrete panel was believed to have caused the damage, but the developer was waiting for more information from engineers. 'Importantly, the authorities have deemed it safe for people to re-enter and they have isolated the issue to a small number of apartments.' The New South Wales Planning Department approved the 38-storey tower as a major project, bypassing local council approval, in 2015. The construction and occupation certificates were issued by a private building certifier. Planning Minister Anthony Roberts vowed that his department would the steps taken to ensure the building's 'structural integrity'. He said that investigation had started and its findings would be made public.

'My heart goes out to those residents who have had their major investments – their homes - affected in such a way and the anxiety it is obviously causing.' Aflak said: 'The authorities have been thorough. Oversight of every part of the building is by a number of independent certifiers and behind them are multiple checks and balances.' He said residents were covered under warranty.

In NSW, the statutory building warranty period for 'major defects' was six years. 'We've all been stunned by what's happened, and we've been heartened by the way the community has rallied to support the residents, from the emergency service crews and The Salvation Army, to the local businesses, hotels and other people who have worked through Christmas to help us through this time,' he said. Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said on Tuesday, Christmas Day, that the affected apartments were in one whole column of the building, from the ground floor all the way up to level 38. He said any further failure in the tower would be 'local', and would not affect the entire building.
